A natural mineral rich ingredient to minimize the look of large pores and orange peel skin

At the end of this post: Learn the complete recipe of a homemade remedy with this ingredient.

Do large pores seem even more noticeable once you apply makeup? You are not alone. Enlarged-looking pores can affect the overall appearance of skin texture, sometimes creating the uneven, “orange peel” look many people would rather minimize.

While genetics can influence pore appearance, they are not the only factor. Excess oil, buildup, congestion, loss of skin elasticity, and dehydration can all make pores appear more prominent. The good news is that although pores cannot literally be opened, closed, or permanently shrunk, the right skincare approach can help shrink open pores and create a smoother, more refined-looking complexion.

One of my favorite natural approaches involves clay.

Why Do Large Pores Look More Noticeable?

Pores are tiny openings on the skin connected to hair follicles and sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum, the natural oil that helps protect and lubricate the skin.

When excess oil, dead skin cells, and surface impurities accumulate around a pore, the opening can appear more visible. This is one reason clogged pores and oily skin often go hand in hand with a more noticeable skin texture.

Hydration also matters. Dehydrated skin can look rougher and less plump, which may make existing pores stand out more. Similarly, as skin gradually loses firmness and elasticity with age, pores can appear more noticeable because the surrounding skin offers less structural support.

So, when thinking about how to shrink open pores, the goal should not be to force them “closed.” Instead, focus on keeping the skin clean, balanced, hydrated, and supported so large pores appear less prominent.

How Clay Helps Reduce the Look of Large Pores

Natural clays such as bentonite clay and fuller’s earth, also known as multani mitti, have been used in traditional beauty rituals for generations.

Clays are naturally rich in minerals, and their mineral content is one of the reasons they are so valued in skincare. Depending on the type of clay, they may contain minerals such as magnesium, calcium, silica, and iron, which can contribute to the skin’s fresh, balanced, and healthy-looking appearance.

What makes clay so useful?

Clay can absorb excess surface oil and help lift away impurities and buildup. When excess oil is reduced, clogged pores may look cleaner and less noticeable. Clay also creates a temporary tightening sensation as it dries, which can leave the complexion looking firmer and more refined.

This is why a clay mask for pores can be especially useful when skin tends to feel oily or congested.

However, more is not necessarily better.

Clay can also absorb some of the oils and moisture naturally present on the skin. If a mask is used too frequently, left on too long, or combined with an overly harsh skincare routine, skin may begin to feel dry or tight. And when the skin looks dehydrated, enlarged pores can become more noticeable rather than less.

The key is balance.

A thoughtful bentonite clay face mask should help remove excess buildup without leaving the skin feeling excessively stripped.

Clays have been known in folk traditions to reduce the look of blemishes and hyperpigmentation

In Ayurvedic beauty traditions, natural clays such as fuller’s earth (multani mitti) have long been valued for their gentle cleansing and complexion-enhancing qualities. They are traditionally associated with a brightening effect that can help the skin look fresher, clearer, and more even in tone. By absorbing excess surface oil and helping remove buildup, clay may also improve the appearance of areas that look dull or uneven, including the visible look of blemish marks, sun-related discoloration, and uneven pigmentation. This makes clay a popular choice in natural skincare rituals designed to promote a smoother, brighter, and more radiant-looking complexion.

How to Reduce Pores Naturally with a Balanced Clay Mask

If you are wondering how to reduce pores naturally, this simple home remedy combines clay with licorice powder, rice flour, and a small amount of fresh lemon juice.

DIY Clay Mask for Large Pores

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon bentonite clay or fuller’s earth (multani mitti)

  • ½ teaspoon licorice powder

  • ½ teaspoon rice flour

  • 8 drops fresh lemon juice

  • Enough warm water to make a smooth paste

Directions

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay or fuller’s earth to a clean bowl.

  2. Add ½ teaspoon of licorice powder and ½ teaspoon of rice flour.

  3. Add 8 drops of fresh lemon juice.

  4. Slowly add enough warm water to create a smooth, spreadable paste and mix well.

  5. Apply an even layer to your face and neck, avoiding the delicate eye area.

  6. Leave the mask on for approximately 15 minutes.

  7. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

  8. Follow with your toner, serum, and lotion to replenish hydration.

This bentonite clay mask for pores combines the oil-absorbing properties of clay with a simple skincare ritual designed to leave the complexion looking cleaner, smoother, and more balanced.

Because the recipe contains fresh lemon juice, patch test the mixture before applying it to your entire face. Lemon juice can be irritating for some skin types, particularly sensitive or compromised skin. Avoid using the mask on irritated skin, discontinue use if discomfort develops, and be diligent about sun protection.

The Secret to Making Large Pores Look Smaller

When learning how to reduce the appearance of pores, consistency and balance matter more than trying to aggressively dry the skin.

A good routine should gently cleanse away surface buildup, keep excess oil under control, provide adequate hydration, and support the skin’s naturally firm appearance. A clay mask for pores can complement that routine by helping remove excess oil and impurities that may make pores appear more noticeable.

Remember that large pores are a normal part of skin. The objective is not to erase them but to support a smoother, cleaner, more refined-looking complexion.

With proper cleansing, hydration, and an occasional balanced bentonite clay face mask, enlarged pores can look less prominent while the skin maintains the nourishment and moisture it needs to look healthy and radiant.
