When you see white flakes on your shoulder and it isn’t currently snowing, that is never a good sign. It could either mean that your clothes are very dusty (which may signal a lack of cleanliness to others) or you have dandruff. Unless you have white hair, dandruff is quite embarrassing, especially if someone notices those white flakes before you do. Even if you wash your hair and scalp rigorously, that dandruff is likely to persist.

There are plenty of shampoos and other hair care products that are specifically designed to tackle dandruff, but you don’t have to use those products to eliminate this problem. Instead, you can rely on the power of natural ingredients and create a few easy natural remedies at home. Continue reading to learn 3 easy home remedies to get rid of dandruff. These remedies can also help you improve the health of your scalp, and grow long, shiny locks of hair.

1. Almond Oil & Castor Oil DIY to Banish Dandruff & Nourish Your Scalp

Simply put, dandruff occurs when your scalp produces a lot of skin cells that are quickly shed. However, dandruff can develop due to a variety of different reasons. For some, it is caused by dermatitis. There are two forms of dermatitis related to dandruff. Contact dermatitis develops due to an allergic reaction, possibly from the hair care products you are using. Seborrheic dermatitis can develop from any number of reasons, your immune system and internal health being one of them. Though seborrheic dermatitis is more severe, both forms of dermatitis are characterized by redness and itchiness. To mitigate dermatitis and reduce dandruff in the process, it is best to lower as much inflammation as possible in order to keep the scalp healthy. This is easily accomplished by nourishing your scalp with oils that are rich in fatty acids, for example almond oil and castor oil.

Ingredients

10 drops of castor oil

15 drops of neem oil

1 tbsp. of almond oil

Instructions

Mix the ingredients together.

Apply and massage your scalp gently for a few minutes.

Leave the remedy on for 3 to 4 hours. Follow with your shampoo and conditioner.

"Within a few weeks, my dandruff actually went away...So if you want healthy hair, if you want to give this product a try, I would really recommend it. It’s Rosemary & Amla Hair Oil."

2. Neem Oil Home DIY to Eliminate Dandruff & Excess Scalp Oiliness

Many people develop dandruff because of a fungal infection. Malassezia is a fungus that lives on the surface of your scalp. Though harmless most of the time, malassezia can force your skin to create a lot of skin cells that will then be shed and turned into dandruff. Because malassezia feeds on your skin’s natural oils, it is thought that an oily scalp may make your dandruff worse. Therefore, using an antifungal ingredient like neem oil can curb malassezia and lessen the extent of your dandruff. Plus, massaging neem oil into your scalp may minimize any excess oiliness because the fatty acids in neem oil help nourish your skin.

Ingredients

10 drops of Vitamin E oil

15 drops of neem oil

1 tsp. of vegetable glycerin

1 tbsp. of aloe gel

Instructions

Mix the ingredients together.

Apply the remedy and massage your scalp gently for a few minutes.

Leave it on for 3 to 4 hours. Then use your shampoo and conditioner.

3. Rosemary Hair Homemade Rinse for Thick, Lustrous, Flake-Free Hair

If you have dandruff, it is very likely that you are also experiencing a lot of buildup in your hair and scalp. When your scalp produces both a lot of oil and a lot of skin cells, they can start to clump together and result in white or yellow flakes. The buildup in your hair and your dandruff may be worse if you have buildup from the hair care products you are using (for example, styling gels, mousses, and hairsprays) or if you are not shampooing your hair effectively. To get rid of this buildup, you should learn how to clean and care for your hair properly. One way to do so is by using a hair rinse, especially one that contains rosemary. Rosemary is an amazing natural ingredient that is antifungal and thus thought to reduce dandruff. Rosemary can also help promote hair growth because it can encourage blood circulation towards your scalp, allowing more nutrients to reach your hair follicles. By using a rosemary-based hair rinse on your hair, you can eliminate any buildup in your hair and make your dandruff far more manageable.

Ingredients

½ cup of rosemary leaves

1 cup of water

Instructions

Combine the rosemary leaves and water in a pot.

Boil the mixture and let it simmer until half of the mixture has evaporated.

Let the mixture cool down.

Rinse your hair and scalp with the mixture after you have conditioned your hair.
