Potatoes and lemons have quickly become two of our favorite natural ingredients to work with. Alone, they can do some pretty remarkable things. Potatoes contain a lot of nutrients and can fill you up quickly while lemons provide a lot of flavor that a dish needs in order for it to pop. Potatoes and lemons can be used in so many different ways; think of french fries, mashed potatoes, and lemon zest, just to name a few. And in case you were wondering, you can juice a potato! Even though most of us would rather cook with potatoes, potato juice can be a fun experiment to try.

Potatoes and lemons are a fantastic culinary combination, and the same can be said when it comes to beauty care. Together, these two natural ingredients can even out your skin and increase skin glow. Today, we will share with you 3 potato and lemon juice home remedies that can help you diminish the appearance of dark spots and melasma on your skin. Just remember that you need potato juice for all of the remedies listed here, so you don’t have to cut a few slices of potato and put them on your skin instead.

1. Potato & Lemon Juice DIY to Even Out Discolored Skin

Potatoes may not seem like they can be used externally, but in fact, they contain powerful properties that can beautify your skin. One such property is catecholase. Catecholase is an enzyme that is believed to even out the skin and get rid of discoloration. With constant use, this enzyme may be able to diminish the look of dark spots and melasma on your skin.

Ingredients

½ tsp. of potato juice

½ tsp. of lemon juice

1 tbsp. of oat flour

Rosewater, as needed

Instructions

Mix the potato juice, lemon juice, and oat flour together. Add enough rosewater to the mixture until you get a thick paste.

Apply the remedy and leave it on for 12 to 15 minutes.

Wash it off with warm water. Follow with your toner, serum, and lotion.

Use 1 to 2 times a week.

"...the Apsara products did work, and they faded lots of dark spots that I had on my face. They are pretty much, I would say, almost gone."

2. Potato & Lemon Juice DIY to Exfoliate Dead Cells and Fade Dark Spots

Lemon juice is a fantastic natural ingredient to eliminate dark spots and melasma on your skin. Lemon juice contains citric acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid that is capable of exfoliating your skin. When you exfoliate your skin, you are sloughing off the dead cells on the upper layers of your skin, and these dead cells may be contributing to your discoloration and dullness. By removing these dead skin cells, new skin cells can replace them and your skin may start to look more even and glowing as a result.

Many of us are familiar with lemon juice and use it as a go-to natural remedy at home, but you may be using it wrong. If you experience any burning, redness, or swelling after applying lemon juice, you may be using too much of it or you may be using it undiluted. If you plan on applying lemon juice on your skin, make sure to mix in some water. Moreover, you should perform a patch test on your skin beforehand to see if your skin is particularly sensitive to lemon juice.

Ingredients

12 drops of lemon juice

⅛ tsp. of turmeric powder

1 tsp. of potato juice

1 tsp. of aloe

Instructions

Mix the ingredients together.

Apply and leave the remedy on for 12 to 15 minutes.

Wash it off with warm water. Follow with a daily skin care routine based on your skin type. Click here to find out what your skin type is.

Use 1 to 2 times a week.

3. Potato & Lemon Juice DIY to Brighten Up the Skin & Banish the Look of Melasma

While you might not think that potatoes and lemons have too much in common, they are both good sources of Vitamin C; potatoes contain 19.7 mg of Vitamin C while lemons contain 53 mg, per 100 grams. The reason why this is important is that Vitamin C has been studied to inhibit melanin production. Since dark spots and melasma are often the byproducts of excess melanin, Vitamin C can help you even out your skin and make your dark spots or melasma fade away.

Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant, which you need if you want to minimize free radical damage. Free radicals are compounds that can damage your skin cells and cause the development of not just dark spots and melasma, but also premature fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Therefore, using antioxidants like Vitamin C on your skin can help you achieve a brighter, youthful, and more even complexion.
