Fact or Myth: Is Rosewater a Facial Toner?

For quite a while, facial toners used to have a really bad reputation. Though many claimed that facial toners were effective at handling acne-prone skin, they would often have the opposite effect. A lot of people who used a facial toner in years past would notice that it dried out their skin, and instead of diminishing their acne, it resulted in more acne breakouts. Because of this, these people did not feel comfortable using one, and it would be left out of their daily skin care routine.

Yet, not all facial toners deserve this blame. The problem wasn’t with the product but with the formulation. There are quite a few natural ingredients that can tone your skin without drying it out. In fact, there is a natural ingredient revered in Ayurveda for its toning and skin-beautifying properties: rosewater. Today, you will learn what rosewater is, if it is a toner, and how it can be a wonderful addition to your skin care routine.

What Is a Facial Toner?

Before we get started, we should first define what exactly a facial toner is. A facial toner has two purposes. First, a facial toner can finish up the bulk of what your facial cleanser does, eliminating any remaining dirt, grime, excess oil, and bacteria from your pores. Second, a facial toner can tighten and refine the look of your skin; specifically, a toner can minimize the appearance of open pores so that your skin can start to look firmer and more youthful.

As you can see, facial toners are inherently beneficial to the health and look of your skin, but the reason why the opinions of toners were so misconstrued was because of what was in them. Back in the day, a lot of facial toners contained alcohol; despite being a disinfectant, alcohol can dry out your skin. When this happened, your skin would either start to look rough and flaky or it would start to pump out a lot of oil to protect itself, resulting in skin that was very oily and acne-prone.

Alcohol should be avoided at all costs when you look for a facial toner, but thankfully, you have plenty of natural options to tone and refine the look of your skin, one of which is rosewater.

What Is Rosewater?

Rosewater is a natural ingredient made from soaking rose petals in water. Even if you have not tried it before, you would probably be able to identify it due to its sweet-smelling aroma. For thousands of years in Ayurveda, rosewater has been used as a natural remedy to cleanse, refresh, and beautify the skin. Because it is made of water, rosewater is commonly used to hydrate the skin and soften it.

Rosewater is also a well-known astringent because it contains tannins. When used on your skin, rosewater can diminish inflammation, soothe redness and irritation, tighten up the skin, and cleanse your skin of impurities. If all of those benefits sound familiar to you, that is no coincidence. Since rosewater has the same properties as a facial toner, we can all agree that rosewater is a facial toner through and through.

Should Rosewater Be Used on Your Skin?

Now that we’ve answered if rosewater is a toner, the question remains: should rosewater be used on your skin? The short answer is yes! Rosewater is gentle and safe to use on your skin. Plus, since there is no alcohol in rosewater, you can rest assured knowing that it will hydrate and soothe your skin rather than irritate and dry it out.

As we have established, you can use rosewater on your skin to function as your toner, which you will be able to find in your local natural foods store. There are two other methods that will help you get the most out of rosewater. First, investing in a rosewater-based facial toner is a great choice if you want a skin care routine that will meet your needs.
