Blackheads and whiteheads might not be as troublesome as pustules or as pervasive as cysts, but they are still types of acne that you would rather not see on your skin. They can be extremely frustrating, especially when you're trying to cover them up with makeup. Although blackheads and whiteheads look small, a single one can stand out, especially if they develop within your T-zone. In your youth, you may have tried squeezing or popping your blackheads and whiteheads, and while your skin may have looked a little better afterwards, by now, you should know just how bad that was to the health of your skin. Using your hands or a tweezer to get rid of a blackhead or whitehead could have resulted in more later.

Blackheads and whiteheads are quite commonplace, yet for the uninformed, you might not be able to tell the two apart. And, even if you do know the difference, you might not have a clue on how to get rid of them without damaging your skin in the process. Well, today, you’re in luck. Not only are we going to tell you what makes blackheads so different from whiteheads and vice versa, but we are also going to share with you easy tips to handle this acne before they become more problematic. We hope that this information can help you clear up your skin so that blackheads and whiteheads become a thing of the past.

What is the Difference Between Blackheads & Whiteheads?

True to their namesake, a blackhead appears as a black mark or spot on your skin while a whitehead appears as a white mark or spot on your skin. However, despite their difference in appearance, they actually have more in common than you may think. Blackheads and whiteheads are both considered comedones, which are clogged hair follicles or pores due to dirt, excess oil, and impurities. Whether a blackhead or whitehead will form depends on your skin. If a clogged pore is left open, the air will oxidize the sebum inside your pore and turn it black, creating a blackhead. However, if a clogged pore is closed by your skin, it will start to look whiter in appearance, creating a whitehead.

Because of how similar blackheads and whiteheads are, you don’t need a specific treatment for either of them. In fact, if you suffer from blackheads one week and whiteheads the next, you can use the tips below and acne-free skin you want.

1. Unclog Decongested Pores & Eliminate Blackheads, Whiteheads with Your Facial Cleanser

Since blackheads and whiteheads are the product of clogged and congested pores, one of the easiest tips we can offer you is to keep your pores clean. This starts by using an all-natural facial cleanser. It is not enough to use a run-of-the-mill facial cleanser, especially when many of them contain harsh chemicals that could be causing oily skin and clogging your pores needlessly. On the other hand, using an all-natural facial cleanser made with Ayurvedic natural ingredients time-tested to curb acne on your skin can deep clean your pores so that blackheads and whiteheads become less of a problem.

To make the most out of it, you should use our facial cleanser twice a day, morning and night. Washing your face at night is critical to wash off all of the dirt, grime, and impurities that have collected on your skin throughout the day, not to mention the makeup you have on. If you go to sleep without washing off your makeup and properly cleansing your face, you may wake up to find inflammation, dullness, and acne breakouts. Therefore, make it a habit to cleanse your skin before you go to bed. (To learn other reasons as to why you should have a nighttime beauty routine.

2. Follow Up with Your Toner, Serum & Lotion to Nourish & Protect Your Skin

Washing your skin with an all-natural facial cleanser seems like a 1 to 2-minute0 task, but you’re not done yet. You should always follow up your facial cleanser with the rest of your dry skin care routine: toner, serum, and lotion. In combination, your toner, serum, and lotion will help nourish, revitalize, and moisture your skin so that it is not prone to dryness or inflammation. When your skin is dry or inflamed, it will usually produce sebum to protect your skin. This is normal, but if too much sebum is produced, it can clog your pores and result in blackheads and whiteheads as well as other forms of acne. Cleansing will deep clean your pores, but it may leave your skin a little dry afterward. As a result, if nothing is done to remedy this dryness, this cycle could start over again.

Your toner, serum, and lotion are essential. An all-natural facial toner has antibacterial properties that keep your skin clean and fresh. An all-natural facial serum typically contains fatty acids that can deeply nourish your skin. An all-natural facial lotion moisturizes your skin, so it isn’t prone to dryness. Remember, it is your goal to not just eliminate blackheads and whiteheads but also prevent them from popping up in the future. A daily skin care routine will help you do just that.

3. Exfoliate Your Skin Weekly to Prevent Your Pores from Becoming Clogged

Excess oil and bacteria aren’t the only cause of blackheads and whiteheads. Your pores could also be clogged by dead skin cells. Your skin is capable of sloughing off these dead cells naturally, but they might accumulate on the surface of your skin. When this happens, you can try exfoliating your skin as part of your weekly skin care routine.

There are two reasons why exfoliation helps you get rid of blackheads and whiteheads. First, removing dead cells from the upper layers of your skin at a faster rate means they are less likely to clog your pores up. Second, exfoliation can unclog congested pores so that impurities like dirt, oil, and dead cells don’t sit on your skin for too long. While exfoliation isn’t for everyone, particularly those with sensitive skin or active acne breakouts (as it could cause more inflammation), it can be helpful once or twice a week to keep your skin clean, healthy, and youthful.
