5 Home Remedies to Remove Blackheads Without Hurting Your Skin

A blackhead looks like a black dot on a white piece of paper, which gets attention for all the wrong reasons. A black head on your beautiful face can make you feel self-conscious and insecure. Truth be told a blackhead almost never comes alone. Take a look at the mirror and you see a bunch of them staring back at you. Not fun!

You try to get rid of these pesky blackhead menaces as soon as possible. Be warned though, you could easily choose the wrong method to get them out of your way. This might have long term effects on your face. Like scars and marks that take forever to fade and some never fade at all.

What are Blackheads?

Blackheads occur mostly around the nose area which makes them very noticeable. Blackheads are formed when hardened oil in your pores comes into contact with oxygen and turns black. In scientific language, this is called oxidation.

Blackheads are the early signs of acne and it is important to address them before they turn into active acne spots. Bacterial infection of these blackheads causes acne.

Blackheads and acne are associated with teenagers going through puberty, and women before they get their periods. But in reality blackheads and acne are just as common in men and affect all ages. Hormones are not the only culprits. Food, stress, medications all play a role in the over production of sebum by your skin. This results in blackheads that can later turn into acne.

Skin care

If you have blackheads you are likely washing your skin many times a day. Or at some point thought that would help. Yep! This all too common myth might be the leading reason why blackheads never seem to go away in the first place. When you wash so much (and with harsh face washes) you only dry out and dehydrate your skin. Guess what? All that washing leads to more oil production, because your skin is intelligent enough to protect itself. So result? Blackheads! Bizarre scenario right. Who would have thought!

Here are the top natural remedies to eliminate blackheads

Baking Soda

Baking Soda is not only for yummy cupcakes, but also for a flawless face. It scoops up the dirt that is clogging up the pores which aids in getting rid of blackheads. How? Well the pore clogging material is hardened oils and baking soda combines with them and turns them into soap. What! Yes true this process is called saponification. Science to the rescue for perfect beauty of your skin.

So then can I use it everyday; like all the time? No watch out. It can dry out your skin till it resembles a desert. Seriously. Use it sparingly and always follow with serum and lotion.

Make a thick mixture of some almond or coconut milk and baking soda and apply it your face evenly. After giving your face a 2-3 minute massage, rinse with lukewarm water and blot dry. Finally, finish up with your serum and lotion. CAUTION: Never use more than once a week.

Since the blackheads are caused due to clogged pores, it is important to unclog them. Lemon is a perfect ingredient which can unclog your pores fast by increasing the rate at

which the dead cells shed. As this rate (turnover) is made faster, the pore clogging stuff comes to surface sooner and then gets out of the way altogether. However, have you noticed that after the blackheads are removed with whichever method, they just come right back? That is because you are not using a high quality serum and lotion every single day, AM and PM.

You are also likely using a harsh detergent (sulfate) based face wash and you are also likely not toning your skin, or toning it with a harsh alcohol based toner. When such is the case, your skin is in a perpetual defensive mode. Producing excess oils to protect its abused self. So blackheads galore!

Dab on some fresh lemon juice 1-2 times a week on the blackhead-prone areas of your skin. Wash in 15 minutes and yes you know the drill. Use your serum and lotion right after. If you don’t you risk drying your skin and that can only make matters worse.

CAUTION: The citric acid in lemon can make your skin sun-sensitive. So always use at night.

Oatmeal is on the list of everyone who wants to lose weight. Now, it should also be on

the list of people who yearn for a flawless face because it comes with multiple benefits. Chiefly the sugars in oatmeal (stuff that makes it a bit slimy) is very nourishing and could raise skin’s water levels. So when your skin is nourished it doesn’t feel the need to produce excess sebum, which is what causes blackheads.

Soak 2 TSP oatmeal in plenty of coconut milk overnight. The goal is to get a thick paste that can be applied on the skin. If the mix is a bit runny, add some corn flour to thicken it up. Wash in 10-15 minutes and then apply your serum and lotion.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can do wonders to your skin. In Ayurveda, aloe vera has a very special place.

It is called kumari in sanskrit. It is calming and soothing to the skin and increases skin’s hydration levels and gets it started on its way to being balanced. Healthy skin does not produce too much oil, and thus blackheads remain in check, or better yet, simply disappear from sight.

Get some fresh sap from your aloe plant (split a leaf) or get natural aloe vera gel from a natural food store and apply it to your face as a mask. While applying on to your face give yourself a 3-5 minute massage. Use a wet wash cloth to remove the gel off your skin. Then spray on your toner. Apply serum and lotion for your skin type. Fuller's Earth (aka multani mitti)

In all honesty all clays have skin decongestion properties to some extent. However

fuller’s earth takes the prize when it comes to impressive blackhead removing properties. It is a miracle clay that also offers your skin trace elements & minerals. It evens out skin color and tone like no other ingredient. That is the reason why almost all Apsara face masks have fuller’s earth in them. While drying it tightens up the skin and similar to a suction, makes the blackheads come to surface until they are shed. But clays can cause the skin to become a bit dry, which is easily remedied by using serum and lotion right after using a clay mask.

To 1 TSP of fuller’s earth add enough almond or cashew milk to form a thick paste. Also add 6 drops of fresh lemon juice. Apply on your skin and wash as soon as it dries (about 12 minutes). Never forget to apply serum and lotion to re-nourish your skin and to prevent dryness (remember dryness can cause blackheads to become worse).
