Who does not desire a glossy and healthy head of hair that is free of problems. I hear you. At the risk of stirring up unpleasant memories, doesn’t it feel awful to lose a handful of hair each time you comb, or to see 3 more strands of white hair where there was only one days ago! What about the issue of dandruff. Haven’t we all hoped it doesn’t show through at a meeting or a party; or that an itchy scalp doesn’t drive us simply crazy. On an even more serious note, scalp issues like psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis etc. are not only worrisome, but also hard to get rid of.

Now let’s look at the positive side of this scenario. What if I told you that your hair and scalp health can be improved by bounds by carefully tweaking your lifestyle. What if I said issues can be prevented from arising in the first place by applying some commonsense methods in your hair care.

Here is my list of top 5 habits and changes that can lead to a head of hair that is absolutely gorgeous and a scalp that is as healthy as the day you were born. I have had personal success with many of these, and therefore I don’t hesitate to put my stamp of approval on this list.

1. Throw away your shampoo now!

Sounds extreme ya? But I mean it. Period. Your hair care products (shampoo in particular) is very likely to have harsh detergents like SLSs in them. It is highly likely to have artificial fragrance, phthalates, petrochemicals and lots other nasty ingredients.

SLSs and artificial fragrance are both well known scalp irritants. They can cause dry scalp, dandruff, itchy scalp and inflammatory disorders like eczema. Per Ayurveda harsh chemicals are high in the fire (pitta) element and cause your follicles to not be able to hold on to hair. Result? Hair fall.


When your hair follicles are so challenged, how likely are they to keep producing the pigment that gives your hair its color. In my opinion not likely at all. Result? Early greying of hair. Use a shampoo that is gentle, SLS free and does not lather up a storm. It is a bad sign. It indicates too much detergent, which is absolutely unnecessary.

Now if you are serious about problem-free hair and scalp, my guess is you will make a switch. I did, and I am better off for it. In fact my story is a bit different. I went to work on a shampoo that I could switch to, and that is how Rosemary and Amla Shampoo came to be.

2. It is not a foolish myth! Oil your hair.

I have heard in the past from people that oiling your hair is not the coolest thing you can do. Especially being seen in public with oily hair. Well nobody needs to see your hair with oil in it. Oil at night and wash in the morning. Do this 2 times a week and you will see how your grandmother was cooler than you thought.


Oiling you hair with the right blend of herbal oils (like alma and shikakai) brings healing and nourishment right where it is most needed. To your hair follicles. Nourished hair follicles means long, strong and glossy hair. A nourished scalp, likewise, is unlikely to be dry or itchy. When your hair oil has added ingredients like turmeric, neem and rosemary oils you can be assured of antioxidants, natural antibacterials and healing components doing their magic on your scalp and hair.

3. Are you getting your vitamins & minerals?

Adequate nutrition is the key to healthy hair. Lack of minerals like copper and zinc can lead to hair fall and poor hair health. Lack of B vitamins (like B-6 and B-12) can cause dry scalp. So look carefully. Eliminate junk foods that can make you feel full without giving you any nutrition to speak of. Eat green leafy vegetables, colorful produce, plenty

of lentils for plant derived protein. Good fats are vital for your hair and skin health. An avocado a day or a tablespoonful of flax seed oil can be an awesome way to get high quality fats into your diet. In addition, drink plenty of fluids (water or fresh juices) to keep your body clean and detoxified.


4. Stressed? Most of it is not real. So why bother!

Might sound harsh but most of the fears we have will never come true. Plus the mind does have the tendency to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Chronic stress is bad for your skin, hair and scalp. It is bad for your health overall.

A very stressful situation can cause your hair follicles to go into what is called the rest phase. In hair growth cycle this rest phase is followed a few months later by the shedding phase.

So stress causing you to lose your hair may not be a myth. Many people report that stress causes hair to turn grey at a faster pace too. So when you are worrying, remember that what you fear is very unlikely to become real.


Talk to a friend, go out for a walk, have a cup of chamomile tea. Or do what is hardest. Analyze your stressful thoughts and go right towards them not away. Go in with the intention of “facing your fears”. Chances are that your stressful thoughts will run for cover. Try it.

5. Don’t use hot water to wash your hair:

Sounds like a simple tip. It can make a profound impact on the health of your scalp and hair. Hot water increases pitta (fire element in Ayurveda), and causes your follicles to suffer. It also dissolves beneficial oils on your scalp and causes dryness, itchiness, dandruff etc.

If all this weren’t enough it opens up the follicles which then allows harsh salts in the tap water easy access. It dries and dehydrates your hair too. So make your hair washes as short as possible and dial down the temperature till it is no more than lukewarm.
