When it comes to your skin, making a small misstep here and there is completely relatable. After all, we’re not perfect, and everyone has an off day once in a while. However, it’s easy for those missteps to accumulate quickly, which can be bad news for your skin. If you aren’t taking good care of your skin, over time, lines and wrinkles may start to look more prominent and your skin may start to look older and duller.

This outcome sounds terrible, but these missteps and bad habits can be very easy to spot. Continue reading to discover 5 nasty habits that can make your skin look old and dull. Understanding what habits are detrimental to your skin’s health and appearance is a fantastic tool to have at your disposal. By cutting these habits out of your lifestyle, you will be able to encourage skin that stays glowing and youthful for as long as possible.

1. You Take Hot Showers or Baths Regularly

Your first instinct when it comes to taking a shower - whether it’s cold outside, early in the morning, or late in the evening - is likely to turn the hot water on. Hot water is very relaxing, but your hot showers may be causing your dullness and premature aging. This is because hot water can reduce your skin’s moisture. This can leave your skin more vulnerable to skin conditions like flakiness, redness, irritation, and inflammation. (Hot water may also result in a dry, itchy scalp.) Therefore, though it may not feel as good, drawing a bath or taking a shower with warm water is the way to go. Preserving your skin’s moisture is important, which is why you should also use your toner, serum, and lotion afterward.

"I started using Krishna & Sandalwood [Face Mask] and ROOP. I was looking for glow, to fade some dark spots, and just to notch up the skin...They’re doing their job just perfectly...So I would highly encourage you to give a shot to these products."

2. You Have Dehydrating Lifestyle Habits

Skin dehydration isn’t just associated with your shower time, though. There are a number of other lifestyle habits that can cause your skin to lose its moisture. For

example, if you regularly drink alcohol, you may have noticed how many times you have to use the restroom. That’s because alcohol is a diuretic, which leaves your skin more dehydrated. Another common example is your environment. We all know that your skin will likely lose moisture when it is dry outside, but the same can be said when it is dry inside. When it gets cold and we start to use our electric heaters, these devices can make the air in the room drier, which leads to less moisture within your skin and can make your skin look old and dull.

Thankfully, there are ways to address these dehydrating habits without having to give them up. If you drink alcohol, make sure to drink enough water per day. If you use a water heater, invest in a humidifier to balance out the moisture in the air. There are many other dehydrating habits we didn’t get a chance to cover, but if you can spot them, there will likely be a number of easy fixes you can make.

3. Your Body Is Retaining a Lot of Water

If your skin is dehydrated, it sometimes means that your body is retaining more water than normal. Because your skin isn’t receiving enough moisture, your body will start to hold on to as many fluids as it can, which can lead to duller, more discolored, and more bloated skin. Two common reasons for water retention are that your diet is rich in sodium or you aren’t drinking enough water per day. Sodium and water help your body function properly so getting enough of both without overdoing either is important. By taking care of your body so that it is properly hydrated, your skin may start to not look as old and dull.

4. Your Poor Gut Health Is Impacting Your Dull, Aged Skin

Believe it or not, your gut health actually has an impact on your skin and could be one of the reasons why your skin looks lifeless and dull. Your digestive system is the home of a lot of bacteria, as much as 100 trillion. As a result, it’s important to take care of your gut. Poor gut health can often translate into higher levels of inflammation that can affect your skin as well as your hair; this can make your skin look old and dull.

So what are simple yet effective ways of promoting better gut health? The obvious solution is to look at your diet. Prebiotics and probiotics, for example, help fuel the

bacteria within our gut so adding foods like bananas (prebiotic) and sauerkraut (probiotic) to your gut can be really beneficial. However, your diet is not all that matters. Stress, for instance, can have a huge impact on your gut health so minimizing it as much as possible can ease you both mentally and physically. To get a more in-depth description of ways to improve your gut health, we encourage you to read this helpful article.

5. You Don’t Have a Daily & Weekly Skin Care Routine

Last and certainly not least, to avoid developing dull, prematurely aged skin, you must have a daily and weekly skin care routine. We cannot stress this enough. Each component of a skin care routine - cleanser, toner, serum, lotion, and face mask - is essential to maintaining a glowing, youthful complexion. First, cleansers clean out your pores of dead cells, oils, dirt, and bacteria. Second, toners tighten up your pores and get rid of any excess oiliness and bacteria. Third, serums and lotions work hand in hand to ensure that the surface level and the deeper levels of your skin are soft, nourished, and moisturized. Finally, face masks are detoxifying and help slough off dead cells on the surface of your skin. Skipping one or two steps in a routine can often mean that it won’t be as effective on your skin.

Even if you already are using these products on your skin, you should check that they are all-natural and made with high-quality natural ingredients. Why? Because there are many products that use harsh chemicals. Harsh chemicals like phthalates and parabens can irritate your skin and lead to excess dryness, redness, and itchiness. (Harsh chemicals in your hair care products can do the same to your hair and scalp, too.) By exposing your skin to these harsh chemicals, your skin may start to look duller and older, regardless of whether you are using a skin care routine or not. So, to sum up, if you don't want your skin to look old and dull, make sure that you have a daily and weekly skin care routine made with high-quality natural ingredients.
